Cubs Among Frontrunners to Sign Top Remaining Free Agent

After a couple of down years, the Chicago Cubs entered this offseason expected to give their rebuild a bit of a jump start. Rumored to be interested in a number of high-profile free agents this winter, Chicago has yet to make a huge splash at shortstop.
Granted, the offseason is still not over, but only Dansby Swanson remains of the four SS stars that were available after Carlos Correa signed a record-setting deal with the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

That being said, the Cubs are one of the handful of teams considered to be seriously in the running to sign Swanson, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale.

The Chicago Cubs, Minnesota #Twins, Boston #Redsox, Los Angeles #Dodgers and Atlanta all in play for the All-Star.
The list of teams makes sense, and Atlanta Braves certainly hold an advantage in terms of being the incumbent team. The Cubs, however, may hold a different advantage. Swanson's wife is a professional soccer player for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League.
While there's no indication that will be a major factor in his decision making, it's certainly an influence on some level.
With plenty of teams vying for Swanson's services and the rest of the shortstop market drying up, he may take his time in making a decision. At least we know the Cubs are in the thick of the conversation right now.
