The Dallas Cowboys are expected to get starter Dak Prescott back for the start of the 2021 season, but they need to make sure they have a capable backup quarterback in case something happens. Well, they are reportedly meeting with NFL veteran Jeff Driskel and may sign him to a contract,
Andy Dalton acted as Dallas' backup last season and went 4-5 as the team's starter after Prescott went down. He has since signed with the Chicago Bears. As for Driskel, he was recently released by the Denver Broncos after the team added more depth by trading for Teddy Bridgewater.
Driskel has been a backup quarterback for his entire career, but has shown he is capable of stepping in if need be. He has thrown for 2,120 yards and 13 touchdowns across 15 NFL games (9 starts). He has also showcased his athleticism by rushing for 309 yards and 3 touchdowns in his career.
The 28-year-old gunslinger comes as a much safer option than current Dallas backups Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci. Both of those young players made their first career starts last season. It would be no surprise to see head coach Mike McCarthy opt for experience in this situation.
As long he he does sign, Driskel has a great shot to lock down the backup QB spot on the roster with a solid performance in training camp.
