A year after posting 104 targets and ranking second on the team with 78 receptions, Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz has struggled to provide the same impact in 2022. Hampered by knee injuries, Schultz played just 18% of the offensive snaps in Week 5.
He did return to practice and had every expectation to suit up for Week 6, until the Cowboys ruled him a late inactive for Sunday Night Football against the Eagles.
Cowboys insider Michael Gehlken revealed the reason behind Schultz' late scratch.
According to Gehlken, Schultz "tweaked" his knee injury during Saturday's practice. Those are the only details to surface from Cowboys camp thus far, but considered this another setback for the pass-catching tight end.
Backup Jake Ferguson shined in his place, catching 4-of-6 targets for 40 yards and 1 TD.
Either way, this is a situation Cowboys fans will continue to monitor. Schultz caught 8 TDs during the 2021 campaign and his ability to act as a safety valve for Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush cannot be overstated.
