The spotlight will be on Ja'Marr Chase in his rookie year with the Cincinnati Bengals. The team used the No. 5 pick in the draft to select the LSU product, which immediately places huge expectations on him heading into his first year.

The most recent report out of training camp isn't glowing in regards to Chase's early play.

The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr. said there's been flashes of what made Chase a top draft prospect, but that's not without some growing pains as he adjusts to the next level.

"You see flashes of that early, but you also see somebody tentatively getting used to a new offense, new league and not playing football since January 2020. He has not shown as much separation as you’d hope, and the contested balls haven’t gone his way much, either."

The rookie not earning "as much separation as you'd hope," while also struggling to make contested catches is slightly concerning. He's not considered explosive speed-wise, but he was touted his for his physicality and ability to make plays. Chase will need to excel at making contested grabs, especially if he doesn't have the speed to handily beat NFL corners off of the line.

It's also only the first couple weeks of training camp, though, so this isn't a glaring issue to get worked up over yet. Chase sat out the 2020 college football season, and any rookie needs time to adjust at the next level.

Chase's performance in 2019 -- 84 receptions, 1,780 yards, 20 TDs -- showcased his star potential in the NFL. It may just take a minute before that dominance translates to the next level.

Chase is projected for a massive year in 2021-22, as many think he could have a Justin Jefferson-esque debut in his first season.
