The Washington Commanders' backfield has gotten terrible news ahead of their Week 11 showdown with the Houston Texans. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that the Commanders are placing running back J.D. McKissic on the injured reserve with a season-ending neck injury.

McKissic — who needs "a few months of rehab" — suffered his injury during Week 8's victory over the Indianapolis Colts. He's been a non-participant at practice since then and with how scary some neck injuries can be, it isn't shocking that Washington is erring on the side of caution.

J.D. McKissic Injury Update

McKissic's absence will be felt in the Commanders' backfield. Though he isn't one to post eye-popping rushing numbers, he was still the team's go-to RB on passing downs. Playing 40% of offensive snaps this season, the 29-year-old turned 49 touches (22 rushes, 27 receptions) into 268 total yards from scrimmage.

Now, Washington's run game is essentially down to Antonio Gibson and rookie Brian Robinson Jr. The duo has made for an effective combination thus far, combining for 677 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on 196 carries. Robinson has operated as more of a traditional running back while Gibson has been used more in the passing game, so expect the latter to pick up the bulk of McKissick's workload.

Still, the Commanders' lack of RB depth beyond Robinson and Gibson is scary — especially if another injury occurs. Considering how they are two of the top weapons in the offense, Washington needs them to remain healthy if the team is going to sneak into the playoffs.

The Commanders are now 5-5 after winning four of their last five games and have improved their postseason odds to +230, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
