After making a late-season push, the Washington Commanders were eliminated from playoff contention officially in Week 17. Now, the result of their Week 18 game is meaningless, at least in terms of a win or a loss. There are things the Commanders can use their Week 18 game to find out, though. One of those things is what they have in rookie QB Sam Howell.

Howell was a fifth-round pick this past draft out of University of North Carolina. Now Washington wants to what it's got in the young rookie while the team has the chance.

The Commanders will most likely enter the offseason in search of a franchise quarterback. Neither Taylor Heinicke nor Carson Wentz has done enough to prove they deserve that spot, and Howell is as unproven as it gets in the NFL.

Yet to take an official snap in the pros, Howell has a big task ahead of him in Week 18. Washington will probably pick somewhere in the teens in April's draft, so without a trade, getting one of the top quarterbacks is off the board.

The opportunity is there for Howell, but will he seize it? The Commanders are 7.5-point home underdogs against the Cowboys in Week 18, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's latest NFL odds.
