Christian McCaffrey just turned in one of the great fantasy football seasons of all time, and the Carolina Panthers have rewarded him with a fat new contract extension. He's now the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
Christian McCaffrey Fantasy Football Value 2020
There's plenty of debate about whether paying an RB like that is a smart move for an NFL team, but fantasy football owners don't need to be concerned about that.
McCaffrey racked up a ridiculous 471.2 point-per-reception (PPR) fantasy points in 2019 — 156.4 more than any other back in the league and the highest single-season total for a back in the past decade.
That value was driven by his massive workload, leading the NFL with 403 touches — 287 carries and 116 receptions (on 142 targets). That volume meant he was basically playing running back and wide receiver — ranking fourth in the NFL in carries and second in receptions.
If we just take his rushing stats, he would have posted 228.7 fantasy points, which would have ranked 13th among running backs. Just taking his receiving numbers, he would have had 240.5, which would have ranked 12th among wideouts.
Volume is far more consistent year-over-year than efficiency, so when we're looking for a first-overall fantasy football pick, we want a guaranteed workload.
This contract is a clear sign that Panthers' new management has every intention of keeping McCaffrey as the focal point of the offense, solidifying his spot as the most valuable player in fantasy football for the 2020 season.
