Chris Godwin fantasy managers had to wait until just hours before kickoff to get official word on his Week 1 status. Those same managers were met with promising news on Sunday morning after hearing Godwin's final Week 1 injury update.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Godwin is "expected to play" on Sunday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys. This is, of course, a win for his fantasy outlook.

Schefter did indicate that Godwin "could be on a pitch count," according to his sources, which throws a small wrench in declaring the Tampa Bay wideout a must-start.

Chris Godwin Fantasy Outlook

Godwin's potential "pitch count" makes his Week 1 outlook hard to fully trust, to say the least. The elite playmaker and last year's WR15 will be giving up snaps in this packed wide receiver room, which also includes Mike Evans, Russell Gage and Julio Jones.

Prior to his ACL injury, Godwin's availability was one of the biggest reasons he turned into Tom Brady's favorite target. The one-time Pro Bowler played in 85% of the Buccaneers' offensive snaps last year before going down.

That sort of workload resulted in Godwin's team-leading 127 targets, which he turned into 98 receptions for 1,103 yards.

While Godwin may get more rest than usual during Week 1, it's likely that Tampa Bay will still utilize him in the red zone. He led the team with 25 red zone targets in 2021--seven more than Evans.

Regardless of how the Buccaneers deploy him, however, his diminished volume makes him a risky fantasy starter in Week 1.

This is ultimately a wait-and-see situation for Godwin to see how he responds to game action. It's best to lean on other wide receivers for the WR1 and WR2 spots on your starting lineup if you have them, making Godwin more of a FLEX in Week 1. Godwin checks in as WR47 in Fantasy Pros' Week 1 PPR rankings.
