Aaron Judge is coming off arguably the greatest offensive season in MLB history — a season that saw him break the single-season American League home run record, surpassing two previous Yankees right fielders on that list.
Now, after an early and disappointing exit from the playoffs, Judge is a free agent, and the rumor mill is swirling. Most well respected reporters and people in the know expect Judge to find a way to re-sign with the Yankees, but plenty are speculating he could sign with the San Francisco Giants, the team closest to the small northern California town he grew up in.
Once upon a time star pitcher CC Sabathia was a coveted free agent, and also a California kid who many suggested would end up with a team out in the Golden State. However, that's not what happened. Sabathia ignored it all, skipped the homecoming and decided to put on the pinstripes. The next season he won a World Series in the Bronx.
Sabathia was recently asked about his potential recruiting pitch to Judge to stay in New York since their free agencies had some parallels. Sabathia's answer was pretty simple, and in turn he thinks Judge's answer should be too, at least the way he sees it.
Sure, Judge could opt for a homecoming, but he might also opt for more money if another team outbids the Yankees — something not previously thought to be possible. However, Judge is a smart guy that can see how much it means to be a Yankee, and especially to be a lifetime Yankee.
And few teams outside the Yankees will have the money or resources to continually support a winning franchise monetarily around Judge once he signs his mega deal.
Heroes get remembered, but legends never die, and legends are made in pinstripes. Sabathia knows that just as well as anyone and Aaron Judge would be wise to show he knows too.
