After an incredibly disappointing 4-13 season and last-place finish in the NFC West, the Arizona Cardinals are undergoing sweeping changes. While the team continues to search for a new head coach to replace Kliff Kingsbury, they've at least managed to solidify their front office by hiring a new general manager and assistant general manager.

Having already signed Monti Ossenfort to be the new GM, the Cardinals made a surprising choice to be his assistant GM.

Arizona announced that it is hiring Dan Sears to be Ossenfort's new deputy. Sears was previously working for the Detroit Lions as their director of college scouting.

While hiring somebody from the Lions organization would have been seen as laughable a few years ago, Detroit has quickly emerged into an up-and-coming franchise thanks to solid coaching, drafting and player development.

Still, it's surprising that the Cardinals filled the role with an external candidate when they already have several promising internal candidates. Adrian Wilson and Quentin Harris both interviewed for the GM opening as well but did not receive either position, as Arizona elected to go with external hires in both cases.

Sears and Ossenfort will be tasked with turning around a Cardinals team that has consistently failed to maximize its talent in recent seasons. Perhaps an outside perspective can help identify what's wrong and right the ship.
