Sitting 9.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central with a .500 record, the St. Louis Cardinals' Wild Card hopes are dwindling.

That's not the only disappointment Cards fans are dealing with right now, either.

24-year-old reliever Jordan Hicks, who was originally hoped to be able to make an August return, doesn't appear to be on that schedule any more.

Discomfort in his surgically-repaired right elbow has kept Hicks out since early May, and even though he's resumed some light throwing it doesn't look like he'll see any more big league action in 2021.

If that's the case, it will leave Hicks with just 10 appearances over the last two years since underdoing Tommy John surgery.

You want to see the team take a cautious approach with the young pitcher, but it's hard not to be disappointed with this news. Hicks looked like a future star in his first two seasons, turning in a 3.59 ERA in 2018 and 3.14 in 2019.

He even showed some reasons for optimism when he did get on the mound in 2021, still hitting an average velocity of 101.2 MPH on his fastball (compared to a 101.3 MPH career average).

Cards fans will surely be hoping that Hicks can at least make some minor league appearances to shake off the rust and work his way back up to full strength. But at this point, perhaps its best to just cross our fingers that he'll be able to resume pitching in the majors in 2022.
