MLB's Winter Meetings are scheduled to kick off on Sunday, bringing a wave of offseason speculation and rumors for all 30 teams around baseball. That includes the St. Louis Cardinals, who are in the market for a catcher after Yadier Molina's recent retirement.
Baseball circles indicate longtime Chicago Cubs backstop Willson Contreras is a top priority for St. Louis, but that won't stop the team from considering other options. In fact, the Cardinals have been linked to a two-time World Series-winning backstop in free agency.
MLB insider Jon Heyman reports the Cardinals view former Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros Christian Vazquez as "Plan B." He also warns St. Louis fans that "he, too, has a nice market."
Both Contreras and Vazquez lead the free-agent catcher market this offseason, meaning the Cardinals won't be able to obtain either of their services for a discount. But, that's the reality for St. Louis after Molina's retirement.
Contreras is a better offensive option and while he possesses a good arm, lacks in general defensive capabilities and pitch framing compared to Vazquez. Vazquez won his second World Series with the Houston Astros this past offseason and shows off his ability to command a staff.
