Cam Newton Fantasy Outlook Explodes After Signing With Panthers

The current shoulder injury to Sam Darnold has opened the door for the Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton to reunite. The former MVP has officially signed a one-year deal to return to Carolina, giving him another shot as a starter.

This new has sent Newton's fantasy outlook skyrocketing.

Newton's most recent campaign in 2020 featured ups and downs. He averaged 17.3 fantasy points per game, finishing the year as QB19.

Newton managed to throw for just 8 TDs in 15 games, along with 2,657 yards and 10 interceptions. His 6.8 intended air yards per attempt showcased his struggles with throwing the ball deep, though his receiving talent on the New England Patriots could shoulder part of the blame.

On the flip side, Newton looked spry on the ground. He ran for 592 yards and 12 scores, the most rushing TDs he's totaled since his rookie season.

Newton now steps into a situation that could elevate his passing numbers with the likes of D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson and Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield. There's no telling how much Newton's running abilities will be utilized with McCaffrey, though, whose production took off once Newton departed in 2019.

The veteran QB could make up for a hit in rushing numbers with improvement in the passing game. He'll have that opportunity at the very least, and CMC's injury struggles could influence Newton's rushing use as well.

Newton's certainly not an every-week starter, but there's certainly upside for the former MVP in a starting role on an offense full of talent. If you have the bench space to spare, Newton could be an interesting stash. And if you're in a superflex or 2QB league, you should go add Newton immediately.
