The Minnesota Vikings need their defense to be at the top of its game when they travel to face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Vikings will be without a key defender — cornerback Cameron Dantzler — not only for this contest but the foreseeable future as well due to an ankle injury.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that the Vikings are placing Dantzler on the injured reserve. He must now miss his team's next four games, meaning the earliest that he can return is against the rival Detroit Lions in Week 14.

Cam Dantzler Injury Update

Dantzler injured his ankle in the first half of the Vikings' Week 9 victory over the Washington Commanders. The silver lining to the situation is that his season might not be completely lost as Rapoport indicates that the 24-year-old is "expected back this season."

In the meantime, the Vikings must figure out how to deal with Dantzler's absence. The ex-Mississippi State Bulldog was on pace for a career year, racking up 45 tackles, four defended passes and a forced fumble in eight starts, also recording a 67.0 overall ProFootballFocus grade.

The Vikings are fortunate to have decent cornerback depth, though. Chandon Sullivan is a solid veteran with 24 starts under his belt over the last three seasons. Meanwhile, rookie Akayleb Evans has only given up 61 passing yards without a touchdown on 10 targets, holding opposing quarterbacks to a 77.5 passer rating.

It would be a boost for Minnesota if Bills QB Josh Allen isn't good to go on Sunday. The talented gunslinger has been dealing with an elbow injury, leading to a questionable status. If he's unable to go, the Vikings' secondary will have a much more favorable matchup with backup Case Keenum under center.

For now, the Vikings are still viewed as underdogs for the weekend. FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists the Bills as 3-point home favorites in a game where the over is favored on the 42.5-point total at -112 odds.
