With Todd Gurley out of the picture, the Los Angeles Rams looked set to enter the 2020 NFL season with Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson at running back. But the team quickly addressed the position, using the No. 52 overall selection on Florida State RB Cam Akers.

With a solid path to contribute in 2020, Akers has some big-time fantasy upside next season.

Cam Akers Fantasy Outlook

With Gurley gone, there will be a combined 272 opportunities (targets plus carries) up for grabs in Los Angeles. It's not hard to envision Akers earning the lion's share of those touches. Neither Brown nor Henderson really impressed when playing behind Gurley last season; Brown averaged just 3.7 yards per carry and Henderson wasn't much better at just 3.8.

Akers, meanwhile, showed some serious athletic ability at the 2020 NFL Combine. He posted a top-5 finish among RBs in the 40-yard dash (4.47 seconds), and had solid performances in the broad jump (122.0 inches) and the vertical jump (35.5 inches).

A former five-star recruit, No. 3 nationally-ranked prospect and No. 2-ranked RB in the class of 2017, per 247Sports, Akers was consistently productive at Florida State despite playing in a bad situation. As a freshman he racked up 1,141 yards from scrimmage with 8 TDs. He was even better in his 2019 junior campaign, with 1,369 yards from scrimmage and 18 total touchdowns.

With that high draft capital, it's going to be tough to keep Akers off the field next season. If he sees a consistent-enough workload he could be a really solid contributor from day one.

Akers is best viewed as a high-end RB3 with major upside, and he's No. 5 RB in our dynasty rookie rankings.
