All of the positive momentum the Cleveland Browns fostered in 2020 was lost in 2021 as they failed to make the NFL Playoffs. Question marks suddenly surround quarterback Baker Mayfield, which makes it interesting to note that Cleveland was named a perfect fit for free agent Marcus Mariota.
Browns Free Agent Targets 2022
Mariota has acted as the backup to starter Derek Carr in Las Vegas over the last two seasons, but finds himself as a top option in a what is a shallow market. The seven-year pro owns a career record of 29-32 and is most known for his ability to scramble out of the pocket (1,574 career rushing yards).
Unless an NFL team wants to sign Mariota as their starter, he will once again be searching for a top-tier backup role. The Browns fit the mould well. Bringing in Mariota would put some competitive pressure on Mayfield and also give the team a fleet-footed replacement if it comes to that.
Mayfield struggled with injuries in 2021 and it led to the worst season of his career. He threw just 17 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions and completed a career-low 60.5% of his pass attempts. Another slow start in 2022 would certainly cause the Cleveland fan base to grow a bit anxious.
This is the ideal situation to pay up for a high-quality backup and the Browns are projected to have over $28 million in projected cap space. Don't be surprised if they end up making a move.
For now, Cleveland has odds set at +2800 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
