Broncos Are Screwing Vikings Out of Top Candidate for Defensive Coordinator Role

The Minnesota Vikings are in search of a new defensive coordinator this offseason after parting ways with Ed Donatell at the conclusion of the season. Donatell's defensive unit was a downfall for the 13-win Vikings and the franchise knew it was time for a new leader on that side of the ball.

Unfortunately, one NFL team is deciding to get in the Vikings' way. The Denver Broncos are screwing Minnesota out of a top candidate for their open role.

One candidate on head coach Kevin O'Connell's radar is Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. NFL insider Albert Breer even refers to Evero as a "top target" for the role. But, new Broncos head coach Sean Payton isn't excited about the prospect of losing his DC... sort of.

Payton has blocked the Vikings' request to interview Evero for this lateral move. But, the tricky part, is Payton's lack of commitment. It'd be one thing if Payton didn't want to lose a top coordinator and keep his staff in tact.

But, Payton is actively interviewing other candidates to round out the defensive coordinator role on his staff. Evero is one of the options, but just one of a handful.

For whatever reason, Payton has it out for O'Connell and the Vikings.
