Brock Purdy's stellar rookie season came to an end in gut-wrenching fashion after a significant elbow injury prevented him from being 100% in the NFC Championship. Now that Purdy's been diagnosed with a torn UCL, the promising quarterback is expected to go under the knife to help fix the issue.

Purdy discussed the injury further on Thursday, but his latest update is sure to spark some concern.

Speaking with KNBR, the former seventh-round pick revealed he may need a more complex surgery to repair the injury, though doctors won't know for certain until they operate on him.

An internal brace solution would put Purdy on track to return by training camp, but he may also need a "hybrid" fix that also involves a partial reconstruction of the ligament as well. That scenario would likely extend his recovery time, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Dr. Timothy Gibson, an orthopedic surgeon in Orange County, told The Chronicle via text Thursday that a hybrid surgery could result in a more conservative recovery plan because they would be relying on Purdy’s graft to incorporate. Purdy might need nine to 12 months to recover if a hybrid surgery is required."

This uncertainty definitely prompts some worries over the young QB. Doctors needing to see the damage mid-procedure to know what kind of operation he needs opens the door for a more disappointing outcome than his initial projected recovery timeline.

The 49ers will certainly be cautious with the rising signal-caller coming off of a major surgery. Hopefully the damage isn't as troublesome and allows for a full recovery by training camp.
