With an 18-13 record, the New York Mets currently sit on top of the NL East standings. However, with the Philadelphia Phillies just 1.5 games behind them, the Mets could use an extra boost in the form of outfielder Brandon Nimmo.
Nimmo has been out of the lineup since last week with a bone bruise on his left index finger. Fortunately, the Mets could get him back in action sooner than later. Nimmo will begin a rehabilitation stint on Thursday with the team's Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse. The hope is that this rehab trip will prepare the outfielder for a return to the Mets' lineup, perhaps even by the end of the weekend.
Brandon Nimmo Injury Update
Nimmo has spent the team's off days practicing his swings, but there's no comparison to in-game action. That's why Mets fans should be pretty encouraged by this rehab stint where he'll be batting leadoff and playing centerfield. If all goes well, Nimmo could "potentially come off this weekend" for New York, according to team manager Luis Rojas.
Often injured, Nimmo was finally coming into his own this season. He's recorded a home run and 8 RBIs through 66 at-bats while also having a career-best slash line of .318/.430/.439. Assuming he can stay healthy, Nimmo could end up being a difference-maker in New York when he returns to the lineup.
The Mets currently have the 4th-best odds to win the World Series at +950, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. With a healthy and consistent Nimmo in the lineup, the team could see their odds improve as the season progresses.
