Earlier this week, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish hired Al Golden as their new defensive coordinator, leaving the Cincinnati Bengals without a linebackers coach. However, it didn't take too long to find Golden's replacement.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Saturday that San Francisco 49ers senior defensive assistant James Bettcher is expected to take over as the Bengals linebackers coach going forward.

Bengals News

Formerly a long-time college football assistant, Bettcher has spent that last decade in various positions around the NFL.

Bettcher's coaching played a big role in helping the 49ers have one of the top defenses in the league last season. San Francisco finished the campaign with the fifth-best scoring defense, so the hope is that he can help Cincinnati get to a similar level — especially after a trip to Super Bowl LVI.

The good news is that Bettcher already has connections to Cincinnati. Both he and Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo spent the 2018 season together with the New York Giants, which likely played a role in Bettcher's hiring.

Nevertheless, expectations are high for the Bengals ahead of the 2022 NFL season. Cincinnati is currently tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the seventh-best odds (+2000) to win Super Bowl LVI, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
