Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season is finally here. Pittsburgh Steelers fans are looking forward to their team's first-week tilt against the rival Cincinnati Bengals, even if they're unsure of who'll be under center as the starting quarterback.
Retired Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger gave his opinion as to who should start against the Bengals on the first episode of his podcast, Footbahlin. In his podcasting debut, Roethlisberger made it clear that he supports Mitchell Trubisky as Pittsburgh's Week 1 starter.
Steelers QB Week 1
On one hand, many shouldn't be surprised by Roethlisberger's thoughts. The Steelers didn't sign Trubisky to a two-year deal this offseason to be a $14 million backup QB. Besides, Mason Rudolph hasn't looked great in regular-season action, while Kenny Pickett needs more time to develop.
Trubisky spent most of the offseason and training camp practicing with the Steelers' starters. This led to Roethlisberger believing that the starting QB role is Trubisky's job and that the former Chicago Bears gunslinger "hasn't done anything to lose the job."
In fact, Big Ben sees Trubisky not only as someone who could provide on-field results, but can also be a positive impact on Pickett's development.
"[Trubisky's] a good quarterback. He's the guy that they brought in here for a reason and I think he's going to mentor Kenny [Pickett]. I think he'll really help Kenny a lot."- Ben Roethlisberger on Mitchell Trubisky
It'll be interesting to see if Trubisky can return to his Pro Bowl form. The former 2017 second overall pick has thrown for 10,652 yards and 64 touchdowns to 38 interceptions in 57 career games but has not started an NFL matchup since Week 17 of the 2020 campaign.
Clearly, there's a lot of pressure on Trubisky to succeed in the Steel City. Hopefully, he has it in him to prove any doubters wrong while helping the Steelers remain relevant following Roethlisberger's retirement.
Steelers vs Bengals Odds (Sept. 11)
Regardless of who's under center, things aren't looking promising for Pittsburgh in Week 1. The Steelers are currently listed as 6.5-point road underdogs to the Bengals, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
