After another disappointing NFL campaign in 2021, the Chicago Bears cleaned house this offseason. Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles were brought in as the new head coach and general manager, respectively, while several free-agent and draft decisions were made to help strengthen the roster.

The truth is that the Bears haven't been good in a while, meaning Eberflus and Poles must make the right roster calls once training camp begins. The fanbase deserves to see the team putting in a real effort to succeed, meaning the excess roster fat needs to be trimmed before we get to September.

Here are three Bears players that won't be on the roster at the start of the 2022 NFL season.

Bears Roster Rumors

1. Dante Pettis, WR

The Bears' wide receiver depth is tough to look at, leading to the team signing Dante Pettis this offseason. Although the 26-year-old carries the status of being a former second-round pick, he certainly hasn't played like one. After 467 receiving yards and five touchdowns as a rookie in 2018, he has only 20 catches for 245 yards and three TDs in the 18 subsequent games. As desperate as the Bears are for wideout help, Pettis hasn't proven to be special enough to be guaranteed a 53-man roster spot. Unless his training camp is out of this world, he could be a cut casualty.

2. Nathan Peterman, QB

Nathan Peterman made the Bears the next stop on his NFL tour when he signed a one-year deal back in early May. Any fan that's familiar with his work knows just how Peterman looked when he started four games for the Bills between 2017 and 2018, throwing 12 interceptions to just three TDs over that stretch. Chicago also signed Trevor Siemian to a two-year deal this offseason and the truth is that the Bears can trust him a lot more than they can Peterman. We've seen who the 28-year-old is at the NFL level and it isn't anything special.

3. Mario Edwards, DE

Veteran defensive end Mario Edwards was once a starter in his early career but has started only one game since 2018. He's also had his fair sure of issues lately, finding himself in legal and PED-related issues over the last two years. Edwards doesn't exactly add much on the field either and if he's going to be nothing more than depth, the Bears may as well cut him and save around $500,000.
