Joining the Carolina Panthers was supposed to mean a fresh start for Baker Mayfield after a tumultuous relationship with the Cleveland Browns. Instead, Carolina's offense has looked anything but great with him under center, proven by his NFL-worst 18.9 total quarterback rating.

The Panthers might only be 1-2 on the season despite Mayfield's play, but that doesn't mean everything is peachy in Raleigh, NC. In fact, the start of Mayfield's Panthers career is actually much worse than it looks on paper.

Baker Mayfield Panthers

Mayfield has completed a career-worst 51.9% of his passes through three games. The 27-year-old veteran has only racked up 550 yards on 42 completions, throwing three touchdowns with an interception along the way. Unfortunately, he can't use a torn labrum as an excuse this time around.

The former Oklahoma product's poor play has led to the Panthers averaging only 276.3 total yards per game (No. 30). He has little to no chemistry with top weapons Christian McCaffrey and DJ Moore, creating frustration across the fanbase considering how the duo played much better with Sam Darnold.

What's even worse is that continued shortcomings from Mayfield could cost head coach Matt Rhule his job. It was reported earlier this week that ownership is losing patience with Rhule, who has an 11-25 record since 2020, and a few replacements have already been rumored.

Bringing in Mayfield was seen as a last-ditch effort for Rhule to salvage his job. Obviously, things haven't gone that way and if the veteran gunslinger can't turn things around soon, the Panthers head coach's seat is only going to get hotter in the coming weeks.

Cardinals vs Panthers Odds

Mayfield has an opportunity to turn his tenure around when the Panthers host the slumping Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. As it stands, Carolina is FanDuel Sportsbook's 1.5-point underdog in what should be a close battle.
