The Houston Astros are still flying high after winning the World Series for only the second time in franchise history. The front office is already buckling down for 2023, though. Manager Dusty Baker has been brought back on a new deal and attention is starting to be paid to the top free agents.

Houston Astros Free Agency

MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that the Astros are interested in signing catcher Willson Contreras. Keep in mind this development comes just a few days after it was revealed Contreras was almost dealt to Houston at the trade deadline. It was veteran Christian Vasquez that joined the team, instead.

The only catcher Houston has on its current roster is veteran Martin Maldonado. The 36-year-old is widely praised in the locker room for his relationship with the starting staff and ability to mix up the pitch sequence. However, his 2022 slash line of .186/.248/.352 leaves a lot to be desired with his bat.

Contreras could slide in at catcher and also take on starts at designated hitter when needed. The three-time All-Star owns a career slash line of .256/.349/.459 and has smacked at least 20 home runs in four of his seven MLB seasons. His 21.2% strikeout percentage in 2022 was a career-best mark.

Of course, adding Contreras wouldn't be cheap. Spotrac lists his expected market value at an annual average salary of $16.4 million and a multi-year deal is certainly at the top of his desires. This is a move that addresses one of the only weak spots on a roster that just won the World Series, though.

Houston has odds set at +600 to repeat as champions in 2023, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
