Astros' Opening Day Starter Officially Announced
By Larry Rupp
Opening Day of the 2023 MLB season is less than a week away and the league has officially revealed the pitching matchups for all 15 games. The list of starters includes Cy Young winners and rising stars, but the Houston Astros are opting to trust their ace from last year's World Series-winning campaign.
Houston Astros Opening Day Starter
Framber Valdez will start against the Chicago White Sox when the Astros kick off their season at 7:08 p.m. ET on Thursday. It will be Valdez's second straight Opening Day start after he guided the Astros to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels in 2022. He pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts in that one.
Valdez has quietly been leading the Astros' rotation over the last few years despite playing alongside Justin Verlander, who is now with the New York Mets. The 29-year-old finished the 2022 season with a 17-6 record, a 2.82 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP across 31starts. He also logged an AL-high 201 1/3 innings of work.
It's worth noting that Valdez has looked great in Spring Training, too, tallying 13 strikeouts and giving up 3 earned runs across 13 2/3 innings. He is set to make one final Grapefruit League start on Friday before preparing to start his first meaningful game since the World Series.
