The Houston Astros (54-35) are in the midst of a race for the AL West title with the Oakland Athletics and currently sit 4.5 games up in first place. One area on the team that needs an upgrade is the bullpen and it looks like the Astros could get a boost with the return of free-agent signing Pedro Baez.
Pedro Baez Injury Update
Baez was able to complete a 25-pitch batting practice to live hitters on Friday, which is a great sign for a reliever. It was the second BP he threw this week and it means that he should be close to making his debut with Houston this season. Baez spent his first seven MLB seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The veteran signed a two-year contract with the Astros in January, but has been dealing with a shoulder injury all season. Baez has posted a career ERA of 3.03 and a WHIP of 1.10 during a total of 356.0 innings pitched. The consistency he presents in the bullpen is rare in today's game.
The Astros are rumored to be in the market for a relief pitcher at the MLB trade deadline in a few weeks. However, getting Baez back on the team would give them the immediate upgrade they are looking for.
Houston will look to secure a postseason berth for the fifth consecutive season and currently have the second-best odds to win the World Series at +450, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
