Running back Antonio Gibson put together a stellar rookie season racking up 1,042 yards from scrimmage on his way to finishing as the No. 13 RB in PPR fantasy football leagues. His outlook for the 2021 season is set to soar as he is expected to take on an expanded role for the Washington Football Team.
Antonio Gibson Fantasy Value
Reports claim that Gibson is being used all over the place in training camp. Backup quarterback Kyle Allen even suggested that Gibson could take on a role similar to that of Christian McCaffrey of the Carolina Panthers. For reference, McCaffrey received 287 carries and saw 116 targets in his last full season of play.
That would be a massive step up from the 206 total touches Gibson saw in 2020. The 23-year-old did play well last season, averaging 4.7 yards per carry and hauling in 36 of his 44 targets for 247 yards. Overall, his 11 total touchdowns ranked as the top mark on the team and five ahead of anyone else.
Seeing Gibson take on a more prominent role in the passing attack shouldn't come as a major shock given his success in college. The former Memphis Tiger hybrid WR/RB registered more receptions (44) than carries (33) while averaging 19.0 yards per catch over the course of 19 games played.
Washington's offensive coordinator Scott Turner spent time in Carolina when McCaffrey put together his best season and knows the benefits that comes from having a true dual-purpose RB. Gibson could thrive in that role and compete for RB1 status throughout the fantasy football season.
Antonio Gibson ADP
FantasyPros' average draft position data shows that Gibson projects as RB12 with an ADP of 18.8 in PPR leagues. He comes with a lot of upside and has the chance to shine as the workhorse on an offense desperately looking to improve its scoring average from last season.
Gibson checks in at RB10 in The Duel's 2021 fantasy football rankings.
