Anthony Rendon Injury Update is Devastating News for Angels

When healthy, the Los Angeles Angels have a trio of stars in Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon. That should be plenty to go after a postseason spot, but the health of this franchise has been a major issue in 2021.

Trout has missed most of the season while Rendon hasn't played in a month with a nagging hip injury. On Wednesday, the Angels received word that Rendon would require season-ending surgery on his right hip. Truly a devastating break for Los Angeles.

One of the biggest struggles of this news is Rendon's contract. The slugging third baseman signed a 7-year, $245 million contract ahead of the 2020 season. Thanks to the pandemic-shortened season last year, Rendon has played just 110 games across his first two full seasons of this deal.

The injury has clearly limited Rendon's production at the plate this season. On the year, Rendon is slashing just .240/.329/.382 with a disappointing 6 home runs and 34 RBIs. This is in comparison to a healthy Rendon, who hit 44 doubles, 34 home runs and 126 RBIs in his last full campaign in 2019.
