The Carolina Panthers have really turned some heads this year. The team has jumped out to a 3-2 start led by an efficient offense and a surprisingly effective defense. Carolina was the league's second-worst scoring defense in 2019, but the Panthers are currently the 13th-best unit in that category this season, surrendering 23.6 points per game (PPG).
However, this defense is far from perfect and it still has one glaring issue: a lackluster secondary. That has been a serious problem against elite wide receivers this season, and it will almost certainly be one on Sunday when Carolina is tasked with defending Allen Robinson.
The Panthers have faced four "elite" receivers, and they've been torched by three of those four. In fact, Mike Evans, Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley averaged a combined 8.8 receptions for 103.3 yards and 0.5 TDs per game.
To be fair, it's hard for anyone to cover players that talented. But Robinson should absolutely be counted among that upper echelon of wide receivers. After a relatively slow start to the year, Robinson has now gone over 90 yards in three consecutive games, averaging 13.0 targets for 9.0 catches and 104.7 yards per game in that time.
There's no reason to believe he'll slow down against a defense that has struggled to contain players of his caliber.
