Adam Wainwright has already announced that he plans to return to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023, but he also said next season will be his last. After 17 MLB seasons, the 41-year-old believes he only has one more left in the tank.

Wainwright also clarified how he wants his final campaign to play out.

While some players do a year-long retirement tour where they get showered with gifts in every city, that's not what Wainwright wants. He doesn't want his final season to be heavily celebrated, as those of Derek Jeter and David Ortiz were.

Wainwright's desire for a more quiet ending makes sense in the context of his career. He's always been a guy who takes the ball every fifth day and usually gets the job done, even when he's struggling. He's never been the flashiest pitcher or racked up a ton of strikeouts, but he's been incredibly consistent, durable and effective for nearly two decades.

After seeing the emotional farewells that teammates Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina received last season, it's fair that Wainwright doesn't want the same level of attention, He just wants to focus on doing his job and helping St. Louis try to win one more championship before he hangs it up.
