Irv Smith Jr. Stats

Irv Smith Jr. was a beast in his first full season as the unquestioned starter in Tuscaloosa last year, amassing 710 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on a ridiculous 16.1 yards per reception. Smith also showed he's capable of making explosive plays, scoring two touchdowns of more than 65 yards last season. Furthermore, Smith proved he's a versatile player, showing success as both a run blocker and a pass catcher last season.

While Smith isn't quite the physical specimen that former Alabama Crimson Tide tight end O.J. Howard was before him, Smith's still an extremely valuable TE asset. Much like Jordan Reed, Smith is an excellent route runner and excels creating yards after the catch.

That being said, he doesn't project as a top-flight tight end like T.J. Hockenson in this year's draft class. He doesn't have the dominant wingspan or athleticism that Travis Kelce or Rob Gronkowski posses either, which often showed up on contested passes.

Irv Smith Jr. Draft Predictions

Kansas City Chiefs (No. 29), New England Patriots (No. 32), Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 38)

Regardless of whether Rob Gronkowski retires this year, the New England Patriots need to find his successor soon. Brady is excellent at throwing the ball over the middle of the field, so adding Smith would make sense. Especially as New England's offense wouldn't be nearly as dynamic without a talented tight end at its core.

Similarly, Travis Kelce is turning 30 years old next October, and he has dealt with serious injuries in the past, so the Kansas City Chiefs might want an insurance plan at tight end this season. Furthermore, the Jacksonville Jaguars are likely replacing Blake Bortles this offseason, and adding Smith would give this potential QB replacement a solid security blanket.
