3 Waiver Wire Replacements After Cam Newton Gets Ruled Out for Season

The Carolina Panthers announced today that quarterback Cam Newton has been shut down for the rest of the season. The team made the decision after free-falling right out of the NFC playoff picture by losing six straight games. Fantasy owners were hoping he'd be able to regain some steam in the Week 16 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, but it'll be Taylor Heinicke playing out the remaining string of games for Carolina.

Heinicke won't make the cut, but here are three streaming quarterback options to replace Newton for your fantasy football finals.

3. Mitchell Trubisky, Chicago Bears @ San Francisco 49ers

Mitchell Trubisky (available in 25 percent of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues) has a nice matchup against a 49ers team allowing the seventh-most FanDuel fantasy points per game (19.8) to opposing quarterbacks. Under first-year head coach Matt Nagy, Trubisky has had tons of success with 26 total touchdowns (23 passing, 3 running). Expect a low-end QB1 output in Week 16.

2. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Dak Prescott (available in 32 percent of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues) gets one of the better matchups in fantasy football for a quarterback in Week 16. The Cowboys take on a Tampa Bay team that allows the fourth-most FanDuel fantasy points per game (21.2) to opposing QBS. The Bucs' sloppy play on offense could certainly lead to turnovers, thus giving Dak & Co. a shorter field to work with, and potentially score more points. Also, with the emergence of Ezekiel Elliott in the passing game, it gives Dak more opportunities to be successful throwing the ball. Look for a high-ceiling QB2 performance out of Prescott.

1. Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Baker Mayfield (available in 34 percent of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues) had his best fantasy performance in the Browns' first meeting with the Bengals back on Nov. 25, putting up 258 passing yards and four passing TDs. Cleveland is a massive 10-point favorite at home, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, in a game the Browns desperately need to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Baker could be in line for another 250 yards and at least two touchdowns in this Week 16 matchup, making him a sure-fire QB1 for the fantasy finals.
