New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius will have Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow to repair an ulnar collateral ligament tear. It should be noted that Yanks manager Aaron Boone said he expects Gregorius to play a "bulk" of next season, but you have to wonder whether this opens the door for them to sign free-agent-to-be and also-shortstop Manny Machado.

It's going to be an incredibly interesting offseason for the Yankees, who were just knocked out of the MLB playoffs by the Boston Red Sox. Signing a player like Machado would almost automatically clinch another playoff berth, but it would also give the Yankees one of the most dreamy lineups in MLB history.
Brian Cashman says it's too early to say if #Yankees will go internal or external to replace Didi Gregorius at SS as he recovers from TJ.

Externally, obviously Manny Machado is a FA. Internally, Cash says Gleyber Torres is "by far the best player for consideration that we have."
Technically, this wouldn't be a glutenous move for the Yankees. Some felt that the trade to acquire outfielder Giancarlo Stanton last offseason was just that.
But this could work on a number of different levels.
MLB free agency is going to be an excellent watch this offseason. Get your popcorn ready!
