You can't expect every single one of your fantasy selections to start off hot, but it's extremely important that your early picks do.
Those who drafted Devonta Freeman were not so lucky as the Atlanta Falcons running back was introduced to an extremely tough Philadelphia Eagles defense that left him nursing a knee injury. Well, those owners were greeted with even worse news Friday as Freeman is officially ruled out for the Week 2 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
After injuring his knee and missing his third-straight practice, Freeman went from not expected to play this weekend to officially riding the bench.
Devonta Freeman (knee) won't play in Week 2 - Devonta Freeman | ATL https://t.co/qEcQFmBq93— SportNewsBuzz (@Sportnewsbuzz) September 14, 2018
A meeting with a solid Panthers defense would've been tough, and it gets even tougher when you don't touch the field.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Freeman. This isn't something that could just affect his short-term status. He rushed for just 36 yards in the season opener and added 14 yards through the air on three catches before he was removed from the game. Pair that with his injury and the door now seems wide open for Tevin Coleman to take over as the top back.
In a small sample, Tevin Coleman has had much more success in games Devonta Freeman has missed, and Freeman's a question mark for Week 2.— PFF Fantasy Football (@PFF_Fantasy) September 14, 2018

Freeman has shared time with Coleman over the years, but Freeman has gotten the majority of the carries. If Coleman gets hot in his absence, what's stopping Atlanta from continuing to give him the ball? Freeman's talent, but if he can't stay healthy, talented doesn't mean much.
