If you drafted Jerick McKinnon this season, our sincerest condolences.
Now that we got that out of the way, it's time to look at what he left behind. The San Francisco 49ers are left with a hole to fill as their starting running back is shelved for the year with a torn ACL. That means there's a decision to make -- should you snag Matt Breida or Alfred Morris with your waiver wire selection?
#49ers Alfred Morris (69 career starts, 5,503 yards, 32 TDS) on Matt Breida (0 starts, 465 yards, 2 TDs):— Cam Inman (@CamInman) September 3, 2018
“He's definitely a change-of-pace guy – I mean, people say that -- but I think he can carry the load if he had to. It'd be a different role for him” pic.twitter.com/nRr0qZUBRI
What's most on Morris' side here is his experience. We've seen him as a workhorse before with the Redskins. He also handled the load last year while Ezekiel Elliott was suspended. Of course, you have to wonder how much the 49ers will lean on him considering last year's production. He eclipsed 100 yards just once, despite having double-digit carries five times last year.
Morris calling Breida a "change-of-pace" guy makes him sound like the backup, but what it really means is he's just quicker and more suitable for the passing game. Last season, Morris had just nine targets. They're going to want to air it out now that they have a franchise quarterback, which means Breida will be the one who will be on the field.
