3 Worst Beats From the Weekend in College Football

Three games from the first weekend in College Football provided some Hollywood-like drama for sports bettors around the country, including one game that had some absolutely bizarre play calls at the end. Check out the games that made the cut and relive those moments of glory, or heartbreak.

1. California 24 - North Carolina 17

Spread: California (-7.5)

Things were looking great for Cal with a 24-3 lead midway through the fourth quarter. However, a 19-play drive from UNC that spanned 92 yards got things rolling in the opposite direction. The Tar Heels later added a touchdown with 1:31 left in the fourth quarter to officially break the hearts of those relying on the Golden Bears to cover by half a point.

2. Ohio State 77 - Oregon State 31

Spread: Ohio State (-38.5)

The Buckeyes 77 points were much needed in a game where they were favored by 38.5 points. Things looked grim heading into the fourth quarter, but they tacked on two early touchdowns and made it a 70-31 lead. The final touchdown for Ohio State came late in the game on a 4th-and-1 run to give Ohio State the space they needed to cover.  Too bad for those who bet on Oregon State.

3. South Carolina 49 - Coastal Carolina 15

Spread: South Carolina (-29.5)

In what was the most bizarre occurrence of the college football betting weekend, the Gamecocks' 34-point victory squeaked through for their bettors late. They were up 42-6 entering the fourth quarter, but Coastal Carolina threatened a backdoor cover on a touchdown with nine minutes left. Instead of kicking an extra point to cut the deficit to 29, the Chanticleers went for the two-point conversion and missed.

South Carolina added another touchdown to make the score 49-12, and that was followed by a heart-stopping drive from Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers had 1st-and-goal with about three minutes left, but were unable to get the ball across the goal line. They ended up kicking a field goal for no strategic reason imaginable.

There was definitely some questionable practices that happened in the second half of this game.
