As the NFL offseason continues, several prominent players remain in free agency. One of these men is five-time All-Pro and former Super Bowl-winning cornerback Richard Sherman. After spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Seattle Seahawks, Sherman has been a member of the San Francisco 49ers organization since 2018.
Injuries marred Sherman's 2020 campaign, holding him to just five games played. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why he's remained a free agent. After all, he's 33 years old and teams might not be sure if he'll be able to fully rebound. However, it's looking like he may end up returning to the Bay Area after all.
It was reported this week that talks between Sherman and the 49ers have been in "preliminary talks" about a return and that these conversations are "accelerating."
Richard Sherman Rumors
There's no doubt that 49ers fans should be excited about the latest Sherman news. Even though he's only been with the team for a handful of years, he was one of the main players that helped them reach Super Bowl 54. He was even second-team All-Pro that season while also playing in the Pro Bowl. Yes, his calf injury may be a concern, but if anyone can bounce back from it, it's Sherman.
In his five 2020 appearances, Sherman recorded 18 total tackles, a forced fumble, an interception and one pass defended. ProFootballFocus gave him an overall grade of 67.7, which was down from the 88.9 from the previous season. Still, there's no way of knowing how that would've changed had Sherman stayed healthy for the entire season.
Aside from his on-field presence, Sherman is a locker room leader that the 49ers value, especially with the abundance of youth they took at the draft. As it stands, FanDuel Sportsbook has given San Francisco +1300 odds to win this year's Super Bowl.
Assuming the 49ers can bring Sherman back, those odds could end up looking even better.
