49ers Insider Predicts Intriguing Free-Agent Wide Receiver Signing

The San Francisco 49ers have one of the most exciting young wide receiver duos in the NFL in Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. However, the team does not have much depth behind them and could still be looking to add a reliable veteran presence at the position.

One name that sticks out to 49ers insider David Lombardi is Danny Amendola. The 35-year-old playmaker would fit into the slot receiver role perfectly and has proven to be very consistent. In fact, Amendola has had at least 46 receptions and 575 receiving yards in each of the last four seasons.

The 49ers could also look towards the draft to find a wide receiver, but that player would likely take a lot of time to develop and fit into the offense. Signing Amendola would be a way for that drafted player to have an immediate mentor and have someone with lot of experience to learn from.

Plus, Amendola averaged a career high 13.1 yards per reception in 2020. His time as a contributing player isn't over yet. He could act as a security blanket for starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo given his impressive ability to get open on shorter routes and his career 68.6% catch percentage.

After missing the playoffs last season, the 49ers need to ensure their offense is strong enough to compete in a strong NFC West division. This seems like a win-win situation for both sides. Head coach Kyle Shanahan would finally have a true slot receiver to work with and Amendola would get to join an expected contender.

We'll see if this scenario comes to fruition out as free agency continues to roll on.
