The San Francisco 49ers recently made a move to add depth at the wide receiver position by signing veteran Marqise Lee to a one-year deal. However, it has since been reported that the team originally wanted to trade for DaeSean Hamilton before he ended up tearing his ACL.
Hamilton suffered the injury just one day after the Denver Broncos had started to get trade offers regarding the fourth-year pass-catcher. He has racked up 833 yards on 81 receptions and scored 5 touchdowns over the course of three NFL seasons (46 games, 9 starts). Denver must now decide whether to place Hamilton on injured reserve or to outright release him.
As for Lee, he is looking to bounce back after not seeing any NFL playing time last season. However, he did post back-to-back seasons with 700 or more receiving yards and is likely motivated to prove he still has what it takes to contribute.
Besides, the position is wide open behind starters Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. It isn't surprising to see the 49ers make a move at wide receiver given they lost Kendrick Bourne to free agency this offseason. He ranked second on the team with 667 receiving yards in 2020.
All things considered, it's possible that we see Hamilton end up in San Francisco eventually, but it will not be this season. Instead, the team will look to help Lee return to his former glory and bring back some of the production he was able to post early on in his career.
