The San Francisco 49ers shocked the NFL world on Friday, sending a horde of draft picks to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Teams don't give up that kind of capital unless they're targeting a quarterback.
But it appears as if the organization has another shocking move up its sleeve. While most assumed the trade was made with someone like Zach Wilson, Justin Fields or Trey Lance in mind, a look at SF's pro day schedule could reveal a different target: Alabama's Mac Jones.
Mac Jones 49ers NFL Draft
Jones and Fields are both scheduled to have their pro days on Tuesday. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan will both be attending Jones' pro day, leaving assistant GM Adam Peters to evaluate Fields, according to a report from Peter King.
That's pretty telling. This doesn't mean anything is set in stone quite yet, but it certainly seems as if San Francisco is leaning toward picking Jones at No. 3. At the very least, they're spending significant resources in the evaluation process to figure out if he's the guy.
Considering most draft analysts believed he'd be coming off the board closer to where the 49ers were originally slotted to pick (No. 12), this is a pretty shocking development. Still, there's no price that's too high to secure a legitimate franchise quarterback.
And it's starting to look like San Francisco believes Jones is one.
