One of the best storylines from the NFL offseason appears to have come to an end, at least temporarily. On Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers revealed their official Week 1 depth chart and Jimmy Garoppolo is penciled in as the starting quarterback.

Garoppolo enters his fifth year with the 49ers with more pressure than ever before thanks to his troubled injury history and the impressive preseason performance that backup Trey Lance put on this summer.

Unfortunately for Garoppolo, the reality is that San Francisco traded up to land the talented Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft. The expectation remains that head coach Kyle Shanahan and his staff understand the untapped potential of Lance and could even start utilizing him in gadget packages as early as Week 1.

For now, Jimmy G owns the starting job and his best bet is to stay as healthy as possible. Over the past four years, Garoppolo played and started in 16 games only one time. In fact, the former New England Patriots backup has missed 33 of 64 possible games during his tenure with San Fran.

It's hard to ignore the one season that Jimmy G stayed healthy. In 2019, Garoppolo led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance while tossing nearly 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns. The defense is elite and San Francisco returns most of it's offensive playmakers from injury to kick off the year. Winning games is easily the best way for Garoppolo to keep his job.

The 49ers are poised to win those games. San Francisco enters the year with the fifth-best odds (+1600) to win Super Bowl 56 on FanDuel Sportsbook, and is favored by 7.5 points in their Week 1 matchup with the Detroit Lions.
