49ers Fans Will Hate This NFL Insider's Take on No. 3 Pick

One of the most interesting storylines leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft is what the San Francisco 49ers plan to do with their No. 3 overall pick. They are widely expected to take a quarterback after trading up from No. 12, but the mystery remains as to which one it will end up being.

49ers fans will not be glad to hear that NFL Insider Mike Lombardi believes the pick will not be Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Instead, he expects San Francisco to be in the market of picking Alabama's Mac Jones or North Dakota State's Trey Lance.

49ers Rumors

This comes as a bit of a surprise given Fields is currently the odds-on favorite to be the No. 3 pick at -135, according to NFL Draft odds from FanDuel Sportsbook. However, these odds will likely continue to change as Jones (+125) and Lance (+380) are not too far behind.

You can never really tell what head coach Kyle Shanahan has up his sleeve. Jones balled out in his junior year with the Crimson Tide (4,500 passing yards), but he's seen as a low-upside option. Lance, meanwhile, has only played in 18 college games and never faced top-tier competition at North Dakota State.

On the other side, Fields has become a popular public choice given his dual-threat capabilities and proven track record. He racked up 5,373 passing yards and 867 rushing yards in two seasons at Ohio State, being responsible for 78 total touchdowns. He led the team to a 20-2 record in that time.

Simply put, he seems to be a much less risky pick.
