49ers Most Likely Week 18 Starting Quarterback Revealed
The San Francisco 49ers are expected to have Jimmy Garoppolo back and starting in a must-win matchup against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18. The eighth-year quarterback has been dealing with a torn ligament in his thumb, but has made enough progress in practice to suit up on Sunday.
Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Update
Reports claim that Garoppolo was limited in practice this past week and split snaps with rookie Trey Lance. Of course, Lance led the 49ers to a win over the Houston Texans last week after Garoppolo was ruled out. It was the former North Dakota State standout's first win of his NFL career.
Still, this is huge news given Garoppolo has posted a 5-0 record against the Rams as a part of the 49ers organization. The 30-year-old QB is averaging 249.6 passing yards per game this season and leads the NFL with 12.6 yards per completion. He also has two fourth quarter comebacks on the year.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has expressed that Lance will be ready in case he needs to play. It's not hard to imagine that Garoppolo may take on a few hits, possibly on his hand. The Rams rank second in the NFL with 47 sacks, but only took Jimmy G down one time when these two teams met in Week 10.
The 49ers need a win/tie to clinch a playoff spot or else they could be in trouble. A loss to the Rams would mean the New Orleans Saints would also need to lose for San Francisco to sneak in. Garoppolo & company head into this matchup as 3.5-point road underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
