The San Francisco 49ers head into the 2021 NFL season with high expectations, but they still have a few holes on the roster that they need to address. It would be smart to add a veteran running back to this team, especially one that can focus on having a receiving role out of the backfield.

After missing out on signing Giovani Bernard, the 49ers need to shift gears and take a look at who is still available on the free agent market. With that being said, here are three running backs the 49ers can still target.

1. Duke Johnson

One of the top names that stick out in this scenario is former Houston Texan Duke Johnson. Johnson has totaled at least 400 receiving yards in five of his six NFL seasons and averages 9.2 yards per reception for his career. He would be a great complementary back to starter Raheem Mostert. Johnson has also proven he can pound the rock if need be and is just 27 years old. He is a great option for the 49ers.

2. Rex Burkhead

If the 49ers want a true veteran running back, Rex Burkhead fits that role to a tee. He could take over Jerick Mckinnon's spot in the offense from last season by providing some route-running shiftiness. Burkhead has hauled in at least 25 receptions in each of the last two seasons and has found a knack for reaching the end zone. He has scored 9 touchdowns since the start of 2019 while only having a part-time role in the New England Patriots' offense. He would be a great addition to this 49ers team.

3. Chris Thompson

Chris Thompson is coming off of a disappointing season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he looks primed to have a bounce-back year. Thompson has shined in a pass-catching role, racking up at least 35 receptions and 240 yards in each of his five seasons prior to 2020. He averages an impressive 8.3 yards per reception as well as 4.7 yards per carry. This veteran ball carrier wouldn't cost much to sign and would likely be open to taking a short-term deal. The 49ers would be smart to give Thompson a shot.
