49ers Fans in Denial Over Mel Kiper Latest Mock Draft

There's only one question about the San Francisco 49ers' No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft: Will it be Justin Fields or Mac Jones?

Long considered the clear-cut No. 2 quarterback in this year's draft class, Fields has tumbled down draft boards, and is even a clear No. 3 behind Lawrence and Zach Wilson (who is all but a lock to go to the New York Jets).

That has excited 49ers fans, as it means Fields will almost surely be available when they pick at No. 3. But so will Alabama's Jones, who was considered just a mid-to-late first-round pick earlier this offseason before his stock started to skyrocket.

49ers fans seem certain that Fields is their guy, but they may be fooling themselves.

Mel Kiper is one of the most trusted draft experts around. And his latest mock draft has the 49ers selecting Jones.

So does ESPN's Todd McShay.

So does Adam Schefter.

So do the betting odds on FanDuel Sportsbook, which have Jones as a -190 favorite to go No. 3 overall.

The 49ers are notorious for keeping their plans under wraps, but there's no much incentive for them to be laying smokescreens when the two picks ahead of them are essentially set in stone already. Fooling other teams into thinking they're taking Jones when they really want Fields just doesn't have any benefit.

At this point, it might be time for 49ers fans to face the truth that trusted experts are nearly unanimous in projecting Jones to San Fran.
