Two seasons ago, the San Francisco 49ers were duking it out with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 54. However, last year was a different story. In a campaign marred with injuries, the 49ers missed out on the playoffs with a 6-10 record. Since then, they've been using the offseason to improve their roster with the hopes of becoming contenders once again next season.

The 49ers added another piece to the puzzle on Friday in the form of linebacker depth. The team signed NFL veteran James Burgess to a one-year deal, making San Francisco the ninth organization he'll be joining since 2016.

The signing won't turn the 49ers into the overwhelming Super Bowl favorites, but that's okay because it's not that kind of move. The 49ers need depth to ensure that what happened last season was a one-off and if Burgess helps accomplish that, he's doing his job.

The 27-year-old linebacker has spent most of his career bouncing between being on an actual roster and multiple practice squads. He's suited up in 31 games over his four-year NFL career, recording 166 total tackles (21 for a loss), 4.5 sacks, 8 passes defended and an interception. Those statistics aren't mind-blowing by any means, but it does show that Burgess can provide the 49ers with a reliable depth option should they run into injuries again.

Even before Burgess signed, oddsmakers seem to think that San Francisco will bounce back in 2021. FanDuel Sportsbook has listed the 49ers as having +1300 odds to win the Super Bowl, which ranks them at No. 4 league-wide.
