Mel Kiper is a veteran of the NFL Draft industry, but even the savviest of analysts can make head-scratching calls sometimes. And there were certainly some questionable selections in Kiper's third mock draft.
With that being said, here are four NFL Draft prospects that Kiper seems a little too high on.
4. Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson
Dexter Lawrence won two championships with the Clemson Tigers and was dominant as a freshman. He racked up 63 total tackles and seven sacks in his first collegiate season, but his production took a hit in the following two seasons. The Clemson product combined for 70 total tackles and four sacks in his final two seasons with the Tigers. Kiper has Lawrence projected at No. 19 overall to the Tennessee Titans, which feels high for an interior lineman who struggles to rush the passer.
3. D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss
D.K. Metcalf is one of the most polarizing figures in the 2019 NFL Draft. While Metcalf has a ton of potential, he was often limited by injuries at the collegiate level. Even so, Kiper projected Metcalf to the Packers at No. 12 overall, which feels high. Metcalf has an incredible combination of size and speed, but he struggles to move laterally. In fact, his 7.38 time in the 3-cone drill was worse than Tom Brady's.
2. Terry McLaurin, WR, Ohio State
Terry McLaurin grabbed headlines at the NFL Combine with his 4.35 40-yard dash. However, the Ohio State product never exceeded 701 receiving yards in a single season in college. Kiper has McLaurin as the second receiver off the board, projecting him to go No. 26 to the Indianapolis Colts. Given McLaurin's lack of production at Ohio State, pick No. 26 feels like a bit of a reach.
1. Rashan Gary, DE, Michigan
Kiper has Rashan Gary going No. 9 to the Buffalo Bills, even though his immense talent never translated into production in college. Gary had just 10.5 sacks in three seasons with Michigan, which is unacceptable for a player with his elite combination of size, speed and strength. While Gary could turn it around at the NFL level, he's an extremely risky pick at No. 9.
