The NFL draft is quickly approaching and a number of trades have already gone down within the top 10 picks. The San Francisco 49ers jumped all the way to No. 3 overall in what is expected to be a quarterback selection. This is a move other NFL teams should try to make in this talented QB class.
The New York Jets currently own the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, but could trade down if another team is able to offer up a huge package in return. With that in mind, here are three teams that should trade for the No. 2 overall pick to draft a quarterback.
1. Carolina Panthers
The Panthers signed Teddy Bridgewater last offseason, but he struggled in what was a disappointing 2020 season. The team finished with a 5-11 record and currently have the No. 8 overall pick. However, Carolina could package that with one or two future first rounders in order to move up. This is the type of move that would put Carolina in a position to compete sooner rather than later. Bridgewater can lead the way until the young quarterback is ready and help the Panthers enter a new era of football.
2. Detroit Lions
Another team with a need to address at the quarterback position is the Detroit Lions. They recently traded away starter Matthew Stafford and acquired Jared Goff, but he may not be the answer they are looking for. Goff threw for an average of just 263.5 passing yards per game last season and tied for No. 6 in the NFL with 13 interceptions. Moving up to the second spot in the draft would give the Lions an opportunity to draft what could be their quarterback of the future. It could be the first step in turning things around.
3. Denver Broncos
Broncos fans have come to figure out that Drew Lock may not be the quarterback that will take this team back to the postseason for the first time since they won the Super Bowl in 2015. Denver has the roster to compete with the top tier teams in the AFC, but need a signal caller capable of going out on the field and winning games. Lock went 4-9 as the starter last season and it wouldn't hurt to bring in some competition in training camp. New GM George Paton could make his first major move in this draft.
