The New York Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball throughout the 2022 MLB season. A 45-24 record through 69 games has them sitting atop the NL East, showing no signs of loosening their divisional stranglehold any time soon.

Even though few teams are better than the Mets, it wouldn't hurt if New York added more depth ahead of this year's trade deadline. It's better for a contender to be safe than sorry, and the Mets should do what they can to improve any possible points of weakness on their roster.

The MLB trade deadline is August 2, and these three players are the most likely to be targeted by the Mets before the first week in August.

Mets Trade Rumors

1. Andrew Chafin, RP — Detroit Tigers

The bullpen is one area that Mets fans are hoping to see improved in the coming weeks, making Detroit Tigers reliever Andrew Chafin an interesting target. He's been a solid reliever throughout his career and this year is no different, proven by his 3.12 ERA and 1.154 WHIP in 22 appearances. Something that Chafin excels at is sitting down the opposition's batters, averaging 12.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Furthermore, he's yet to give up a home run. While the southpaw is a free agent at the end of the year, he has a 2023 player option, which he could be tempted to pick up on a contender like the Mets.

2. Patrick Wisdom, IF/LF — Chicago Cubs

Aside from Pete Alonso, the Mets could use another power bat in their lineup — perhaps at the designated hitter position. That's why Patrick Wisdom should be at the top of their trade list. The Chicago Cubs veteran isn't afraid to go yard when needed, having crushed 40 home runs in his last 169 games. His batting average isn't great this year (.216) and he leads the National League with 88 strikeouts, but the Mets need him for his power more than anything. Given that the Cubs will likely be sellers, many teams will be calling them about Wisdom, meaning the Mets would be wise to trade and grab him as soon as possible.

3. Zach Davies, SP — Arizona Diamondbacks

The Mets' two aces — Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer — have both missed significant time due to injury. It wouldn't hurt to add another starter to the mix in Zach Davies. The Arizona Diamondbacks' hurler has a respectable 3.96 ERA in 14 starts this season, averaging 7.2 strikeouts and 7.8 hits per nine innings. He averages about 5.1 innings per start, making him a solid option for the back of the rotation. Davies won't win the Mets a World Series on his own, but he can still be a difference-maker as the season goes on.
