The Florida Gators are known as one of the best college football programs of all time, having success throughout their storied history. You don't have as much success as they do in Gainesville without putting some great players on the field.
Running back has been a strong suit in Florida's football program, so with that being said, let's take a look at the three greatest running backs in Florida Gator football history.
3. Fred Taylor (1994-97)
Fred Taylor is known for his great NFL career, but he was also a dominant college player at Florida. In his time there, he became the fourth-leading rusher in school history with 3,075 career rushing yards. His 1997 season was his best, running for 1,292 yards, good enough for fourth-most rushing yards in a single season at Florida. Additionally, he ranks fifth in career rushing touchdowns with 31.
2. Errict Rhett (1990-93)
Errict Rhett is Florida's career rushing leader. He's the only person to eclipse 4,000 career rushing yards in school history with 4,163. He ranks third all-time in career rushing touchdowns with 34 and put up almost an identical season to Fred Taylor in 1993 when he rushed for 1,289 yards – just three yards fewer than what Taylor would accomplish four years later.
1. Emmitt Smith (1987-89)
Emmitt Smith is the clear number one here. He ranks second all-time at Florida with 3,928 career rushing yards. Smith also has the two highest single-season rushing yardage totals in Florida history with 1,341 and 1,599 yards in 1987 and 1989, respectively. On top of the two best single-season rushing performances, Smith also has the two best single-game rushing performances with 224 yards in 1987 against Alabama and a whopping 316 yards in 1989 against New Mexico. Additionally Smith ranks second in career rushing touchdowns at Florida with 36. The most impressive part about all of this? He did it in just three years of play.
